The South of France 27th June to 6th July 2016

An old hunting ground of mine. I thought I go see if it's still there, and, yes it is, even though it is now a little more congested, and a even busier than before. I rented a flat from Silvia, in Cannes, and stayed one night at the Hotel l'Lesterel. I took one day trip to Alassio in Italy and write about that separately. Here are some shots.

For a great detective story set in Cannes, and which just about sums up the attractions of living in this part of the world, see my novella DARK HARBOUR. The link to this book is at the top of the page.

Visit to Salisbury Cathedral 5th May 2016

A very impressive building, with the world's oldest clock (said to be), a copy of the Magna Carta, and British Prime Minister Edward Heath's former home just across the way.

Visit to Stonehenge 5th May 2016

I took the train to Salisbury, and then the bus to Stonehenge. Cost: £28 Adult return. At the reception centre, shuttle buses take visitors to and from the stones, or they can choose to walk. It's about half a mile (my guess). The weather was glorious. The reception centre has a cafĂ©, and toilets. This is a couple od hundred yards from the car park, and bus park. Highly recommended.

Roman Caerleon

Isca - Legionary Fortress

The Second Augustan Legion moved here about 75AD, and Caerleon remained a major Roman location until about 240AD.

The entrance to the museum; inside the museum - which is much larger than it appears here, and, like everything else is beautifully kept and presented; a Roman gravestone; a Roman treasure trove; and the amphitheatre. Not shown, are the Roman baths, and the Roman barracks.

The perfect place to dine and stay in South Wales

The Stonemill, near Monmouth. I have not stayed here, but I have dined here and can attest to the quality both of the food and drink, and also of the service.
